THE EMERALD ISLES

The area of Andaman Islands, an archipelago between the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, is a part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India. It is situated in the middle of three countries –Myanmar in the east and north, Indian peninsula in the west and south-west and Shrilanka in the south-west. An Italian traveler mentioned the Islands of Andaman as 'Islands of God'. The name itself carries legend behind it. According to some people the name of Andaman came from the word 'Andoman'. Hanuman, an Indian God, is called Andoman in Malay language.

For many years Andaman Islands themselves and people there have been almost in an isolated condition. Several invasions occurred and many have established empire in these islands. The Chola Dynasty, Marathas, British and Japanese stepped and ruled over there one after another. After World War II, the area was again became part of British colony and finally since independence it is a part of India with Port Blair being the chief community.

A lot of Bengali, Hindustani, Tamil families migrated and started to stay in some part of these islands, but the original people here are the Jarawas, Onges, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese. It’s not a long time back when the tribal people started to wear clothes, although many of them still don’t use it to cover themselves. A lot of people here follow the religions of Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Christianity, Buddhism or Sikhism. But the tribal people of Andaman believe in one supreme god named as Paluga.

Now-a-days Andaman Islands are mostly famous as a tourist places in andaman and visited frequently by people from all around the world. It is also a place for historical importance mainly because of the Cellular Jail in andaman, where Indian freedom fighters used to be kept by British Govt. The islands like Havelock Island, Little Andaman, Neil Island, Middle Andaman Island, Ross Island, Barren Island etc. are all famous among the tourists for the beaches in andaman or sightseeing andaman with different means of transports including sea-plane. The large variety of flora and fauna attracts the wildlife photographers, researchers, nature lovers too along with the tourists. Water sports like sea-walking, scuba-diving, snorkeling are very much popular in Andaman Islands. Airways - How to reach andaman,The Port Blair Airport is well connected to the airports of Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi. Taking a flight to reach Andaman is the best way as it is very comfortable and do not take time more than 2-3 hours.

Seaways - Regular passenger ships can be taken from the ports of Chennai, Kolkata or Vishakhapatnam but it takes a long time of 50 to 60 hours to reach Port Blair and the journey is less comfortable too.

Roadways and Railways – People from anywhere around the world can reach Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai or Vishakhapatnam by railways or any mean of roadways. But finally they have to make their journey towards Andaman through air or sea from these places.
